What asbestos roof and sheet removal in Wollongong actually involves

It is legal for a homeowner to remove 10 m² or less of bonded asbestos themselves, or to have a tradesperson do it. The NSW Government still strongly recommends a licensed removalist, because there is no safe level of exposure. At the instrument, the WHS Regulation 2025 writes the same area line for a business's own removal work: over 10 m² needs a licence; 10 m² or less is exempt. Wollongong City Council says the same line to residents, in its own words: more than 10 square metres, use a licensed removalist. If you are close to the line, treat the job as licensed work.

Roofs, water and packing

High-pressure water spray and compressed air must never be used on asbestos. Removal uses a wet spray method, and even then the fibres are only suppressed, so respiratory protection stays essential. Sheets come down whole and wet where they can, and non-friable asbestos must be securely packaged before it travels. The disposal page covers where the packed sheets can go.

Wollongong City Council's asbestos page lists where asbestos tends to be found in an older house: walls, roofs and eaves, vinyl tiling, drains and oven or heating flues. It says a house built before 1990 has a good chance of containing some.
