Asbestos Removal in Wollongong

What decides who may remove asbestos is friability and area, not the suburb. Any amount of friable asbestos, or more than 10 square metres of non-friable (bonded) asbestos, must be removed by someone SafeWork NSW has licensed. Under that area, a homeowner may remove bonded asbestos themselves, though the NSW Government strongly recommends a licensed removalist instead.

Before a licensed job starts

SafeWork NSW's minimum is five calendar days' notice from the removalist before licensed work begins. The licence holder then gives notice of the work and its start date to whoever commissioned it, you as the occupier, the owner and the immediate neighbours, and puts up asbestos warning signs. The clock matters: with a start date in mind, the notice period is the first thing to lock in.

After the work

A clearance inspection and certificate come before anyone moves back in, from a licensed asbestos assessor for Class A work or a competent person for Class B work. Keep the certificate with the disposal receipt. The disposal page covers where the waste can go, and the Wollongong council depot is not one of the answers.

Wollongong City Council states its own line: if you are removing more than 10 square metres of asbestos, you must use a licensed asbestos removalist.
